What is the FCCA8-DM and where is it used?
The FCCA8-DM is a free cooling controller designed to help commercial and industrial buildings reduce energy consumption by using cool outdoor air instead of traditional air conditioning whenever conditions are suitable.
The controller continuously monitors both indoor and outdoor temperatures and automatically determines when free cooling can be used. This makes it a practical solution for ventilation and cooling systems where natural outdoor air can help maintain a comfortable indoor temperature while reducing energy costs.
How does the fan speed control work?
The FCCA8-DM provides two fan speed control modes. With Variable Fan Speed Control, the controller automatically increases or decreases the fan speed in steps according to the temperature difference between indoor and outdoor air. This allows the system to adapt to changing conditions and operate more efficiently.
With Fixed Fan Speed Control, the fan operates at a preset speed whenever free cooling is active. The controller also has a Boost button, which temporarily increases the fan speed for a defined period, making it useful when a quick air refresh is required.
An Override Control function is available when manual operation is required. Override takes priority over the automatic control settings, even during an alarm condition, although it does not control the air damper.
How is the alarm state managed?
When a fault is detected, the FCCA8-DM follows a controlled shutdown sequence. The fan is stopped first and allowed to come to a complete stop before the air damper is closed. After the fault has been resolved, the controller waits 20 seconds before returning to normal operation. If the same fault occurs more than 10 times, the controller enters a safety lockout and must be power-cycled before it can operate again.
Temperature inputs, outputs and power supply
The controller uses two PT500 temperature sensors to measure indoor and outdoor temperatures. The sensors provide a measurement range of -55°C to +155°C with a resolution of 0,1°C. The analogue output can be configured for 0–10 VDC, 4–20 mA or PWM, allowing the controller to work with different fan types. It operates on 85–264 VAC, 50/60 Hz and provides a 24 VDC supply for connected sensors and accessories.
For connection to a Building Management System (BMS), the FCCA8-DM supports Modbus RTU via RS-485, with communication distances of up to 1000 metres.
Protection and status indication
The FCCA8-DM features a robust grey plastic enclosure designed for wall mounting and has an IP54 protection rating. It is suitable for operating temperatures between -10°C and +60°C. A built-in RGB LED indicator provides a quick overview of the controller's status. Green indicates normal operation, yellow indicates a warning, and red indicates an alarm or serious fault. Other colours can indicate functions such as firmware updates or button activation. This makes it easy for users to monitor the system's operating condition and quickly identify when attention is required.
