Product description

Frequency converter to regulate the speed of single-phase motors. It is designed to control fans or pumps in HVAC applications. The motor speed can be set via the intuitive keypad or via the inputs. Configuration is simplified via 14 basic parameters and application macro functions.

This frequency converter can control permanent split capacitor motors or shaded pole induction motors. The integrated EMC filter is Class C1. The maximum motor current is 7 A.

The enclosure is dust-tight and washdown ready. It offers an IP66 protection against ingress of dirt and water. Its heatsink is corrosion resistant. The supply voltage is 230 VAC. The integrated EMC filter is Class C1. Manufacturers code: ODE-3-120070-1F1A-01

User-friendly variable speed control
A variable fan speed controller regulates motor voltage only. A frequency inverter also controls the motor frequency in addition to the motor voltage. On the one hand, there is the advantage of optimal motor control and more energy-efficient operation. On the other hand, there is the higher cost and the need to set some necessary parameters before commissioning. The fact that motor voltage and motor frequency can be controlled provides additional control options and thus additional parameters. To make the device as user-friendly as possible, application macro functions have been created. The main settings are grouped into the 14 basic parameters - these can be found on the help card in the enclosure.
Kickstart acceleration of single phase motors 
This frequency inverter controls Permanent Split Capacitor or shaded-pole single phase induction motors. It requires a single-phase supply voltage (110 – 240 VAC) and is designed for applications where high starting torque is not required. Typical applications are fans, blowers, centrifugal pumps (swimming pools), fume extractors, air flow controllers, etc. This frequency inverter uses a revolutionary motor control strategy to achieve reliable intelligent starting of single phase motors. To ensure reliable starting of single phase motors, the drive initially accelerates the motor voltage to rated voltage whilst maintaining a fixed starting frequency, before reducing the frequency and voltage to the desired operating point. This acceleration method can be compared to kick-start acceleration. Single-phase motors can only be driven in one direction of rotation.

Waterproof enclosure for harsh environments 
The enclosure is designed to protect the electronics even in harsh environments or in outdoor applications. It offers an IP66 protection against the ingress of water, dirt and contaminants. This makes it possible to install this frequency inverter directly on the installation, even in high-pressure wash-down applications. It eliminates the need of an electric cabinet. It is advisable to protect the device against snow and direct sunlight. 

An application example
purple box with red linesThis application example explains how to control fan speed. T1 is for the 24V power supply to T2 and T4. The left contact (T2) starts / stops the fan. When the right contact (T4) is closed, the fan runs at the predefined fixed speed (adjustable in parameter 20). When the right contact is open, fan speed can be selected manually via a 10K potentiometer or regulated demand based via an HVAC sensor (0-10 Volt signal). The wiring diagram on the right shows the connection of a 10K potentiometer. T5 is for the 10V power supply in case a 10K potentiometer is connected while T6 and T7 can be used to select fan speed via an analogue signal. After the wiring is done, you enter the specifications of the connected motor in parameters 1 – 10. The motor can now be started!

Pulse-width modulation
Frequency inverters control motor voltage and motor frequency via a technology called pulse-width modulation. This technology converts the supplied AC voltage into DC voltage. A frequency inverter has a DC bus, which can be seen as a buffer tank for the available energy. This buffer tank is filled both by the supply voltage (via the rectifier) and by regenerative energy from the motor that flows back during braking. This DC voltage is converted back into a kind of alternating voltage by IGBTs. IGBTs or Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors are bipolar transistors with an insulated gate terminal that can switch high electrical current at high speed. Thanks to the smart control of the IGBTs, both the motor voltage and the motor frequency can be controlled. This enables optimum motor control and energy-efficient operation.
Standard built-in EMC filter class C1
A disadvantage of high-frequency switching IGBTs is the fact that they pollute the electrical network with higher harmonic interference signals (EMC pollution). To minimize this network pollution, an EMC filter class C1 is built in as standard. This frequency inverter is also equipped with an integrated brake chopper. This makes it possible to connect a brake resistor to reduce the deceleration time if necessary. Sentera HVAC sensors can be connected via the analogue input or via Modbus RTU communication.
