What is CE marking?
CE stands for Conformité Européenne, which means European Conformity. It indicates that a product complies with the essential health, safety, and environmental requirements set out in applicable European Union (EU) legislation.
CE marking is essential for gaining access to the European Economic Area (EEA) market. It demonstrates regulatory compliance and enables the free movement of goods within the EEA. Without CE marking (where required), a product cannot be legally sold or distributed in this market.
CE marking is not a quality mark, but a declaration of conformity with EU rules.
Which products require CE marking?
Not all products require CE marking. The requirement applies only to products covered by specific EU directives or regulations.
Conversely, products that fall outside the scope of CE legislation — such as most food products, cosmetics, chemicals, and certain consumer goods — are not allowed to bear the CE mark.
Manufacturers are responsible for identifying which EU regulations apply to their products and determining whether CE marking is required.
By affixing the CE mark, the manufacturer declares that the product has undergone the required conformity assessment procedures and meets all relevant EU legal requirements.
The CE mark confirms that a product:
- Complies with applicable EU legislation
- Meets essential health, safety, and environmental protection requirements
- Is eligible to be placed on the market in the European Economic Area (EEA)
- Can circulate freely within the EEA once legally placed on the market
Common product categories that typically require CE marking include:
- Machinery
- Electrical and electronic equipment
- Medical devices
- Toys
- Construction products
- Personal protective equipment

CE symbol
The CE symbol consists of the letters “C” and “E” in a standardized, stylized form.
It must be clearly visible, legible, and indelible.
The CE mark is placed directly on the product whenever possible, or alternatively on the packaging or accompanying documentation.
