Product description

This sensor measures the temperature of water pipes. It is mounted directly onto the water pipe thus eliminating the risk of corrosion and leaks, without impacting the flow rates.

The copper plate is a temperature conductor that registers the temperature of the pipe. The temperature of the pipe is a good indicator of the water temperature inside.

The measured temperature is transmitted via Modbus RTU. The supply voltage is 3,3 VDC - both power supply and Modbus RTU communication are connected via the RJ12 connector.

Additional specifications and description

Measure water pipe temperature

This digital sensor measures the temperature of water pipes. This is a good indicator of the water temperature inside the pipe. The sensor comes with a blue thermal pad. A thermal pad is a thin rectangle made out of thermally conductive material. Install the thermal pad between the copper plate of the DTP-M sensor and the pipe. A thermal pad fills air gaps that develop when the pipe surface is not perfectly flat. As a result, the temperature readout is more accurate and external influences are minimal.

Compact waterproof enclosure  Temperature sensor for fluid pipes
This sensor has a compact and waterproof enclosure. The sensor can be mounted in places where there is little space because of its compactness. Despite its small size, the enclosure offers an IP65 protection rating against the ingress of water and dust. The sensor comes with a thermal pad and a heat-resistant cable tie. This makes the sensor easily mountable on a broad range of pipe diameters.

Robust and reliable
Classic passive PT100 sensors measure temperature as a resistance-based value, where 0 °C equals 100 Ohm. However, the cable through which the output signal travels also has a certain resistance value. This distorts the measured value and this distortion grows stronger with longer cable lengths. Digital temperature sensors with an analogue 0-10 Volt output signal have a similar disadvantage. Longer cable lengths have a higher resistance that influences the 0-10 Volt signal. The DTP-L sensor does not have these disadvantages. It works fully digitally and does not have a 0-10 Volt output. The measured temperature is transmitted via Modbus RTU communication. Modbus RTU communication cables can have a length of up to 1.000 meters. That is much longer than the maximum length for analogue signals.

Power over Modbus
One RJ12 connector plug is all it takes to connect this sensor! Modbus RTU communication and 3.3 Volt power supply go over only one cable - we call it Power over Modbus or PoM. The measured temperature is available via Modbus RTU communication. A 3.3 VDC supply voltage increases the reliability and safety of your installation.

SenteraWeb – cloud platform for data logging
A Sentera internet gateway can connect this sensor to SenteraWeb. This is Sentera’s state-of-the-art HVAC cloud platform. SenteraWeb has many opportunities for your application. Its data logging will inform you flawlessly about the evolution of the water temperature. You can go back in time to view a graph of water temperatures and see the temperature at any given time. You can receive notifications if the water temperature drops too low, or reversely, rises past a certain temperature. View SenteraWeb’s full functionalities at www.senteraweb.eu.

Application examples
This sensor is typically used to measure water temperature in supply and return pipes. It can be used to check if boilers, heat pumps and fan heaters work as intended. It can also indicate that the settings of a heater need revising: if the temperature of the water in the pipe drops too soon, the boiler temperature may need to be set to a higher temperature. The distribution of water to a fan heater may also not have been set well. The device can be used for measuring the temperature of boilers that heat up to 85°C. Another application is (public) swimming pools. With this product, you can know how long it takes for the water temperature to reach comfortable levels and how much heating this requires. This knowledge may help you decide at what temperature to set your boiler to conserve energy.
